Butterflies

Description

Butterflies of the Pacific Northwest.
I have wanted to draw butterflies for awhile, and their diversity overwhelmed me when I was brainstorming for this piece, so I decided to start with butterflies near where I live...

From top left to lower right:
- Green Comma -- it's an anglewing! do you see the comma?
- Acmon Blue (male) -- As someone who's used to drab brown mammals, I'm easily impressed by critters that are blue, purple, and colorful.
- American Lady -- representing the 'ladies' here
- Common Buckeye -- with beautiful eye spots on its wing
- Blue Copper -- a 'copper' that is blue
- Ochre Ringlet -- a cute little guy
- Bramble Green Hairstreak -- do you see the stubby 'hairstreak'?
- Indra Swallowtail -- I love the heart-shapes on the edge of the wings!
- Common checkered skipper -- the skippers remind me of moths
- Great Spangled Fritillary (female!) -- the males are orange colored, instead of yellow.
- Sara's Orangetip -- their lower hindwing have brownish-green marbling
- Monarch -- aren't they just gorgeous?! Their incredible migrations are completed over generations.

Done with color pencil and pastel. Welcome comments and suggestions!
Also, I'm still learning about butterflies while consulting Field Guide to Butterflies of North America, so let me know if anything's drawn incorrectly.

I know a little bit about moths and butterflies. Very nicely done!
